The Story Behind the Brand
The journey began with Mr. P. B. Aboobacker, also known as Puthenveetil Bawoo Abobacker, who was born in 1949 in Perinjanam, a village in Kerala, India. Growing up in a region known for its natural beauty, coastal landscapes, and close-knit communities, he developed the determination to build a better future through hard work and entrepreneurship.
After completing his early education in Kerala, he moved to Madras, now Chennai, where he gained business experience before travelling to Bombay, now Mumbai. There, he assisted his brothers with their traditional Indian hotel business. Although this experience taught him valuable lessons, his ambition extended beyond the family business. He wanted to establish something of his own, something that could provide financial stability while making a meaningful contribution to society.

Building a Future in the UAE
Drawn by the opportunities emerging in the United Arab Emirates, Mr. Aboobacker moved to Dubai during the country’s early years of development. He began working at the InterContinental Hotel before receiving an opportunity to establish a small tea shop and convenience store in Ajman in 1977.
The business gradually grew into a popular gathering place for families and visitors. It was during his years in the food and hospitality industry that he noticed a significant concern: drinking water was not always handled or stored hygienically. Recognizing the growing need for cleaner and more convenient water supplies, he saw an opportunity to make a difference.
In 1997, he established Madina Water in Ajman, focusing on economical five-gallon bottled water for homes and businesses. As demand increased, operations expanded with a production facility in Al Qusais, Dubai, in 2000.
A Difficult Chapter and a New Beginning
Business challenges eventually placed the company under financial pressure. Mr. Aboobacker, who placed great importance on friendship and personal relationships, faced difficult decisions as disagreements and financial difficulties affected the business.
During this period, his eldest son, Mr. Shihaz Sulthan, stepped forward to support his father. At just 22 years old, while pursuing his studies at the University of Wollongong, he witnessed the challenges surrounding the family enterprise. Although the original business could not continue in its existing form, the vision behind it remained alive.
Rebuilding a Father’s Dream
In 2007, after gaining experience and saving money through other business ventures, Mr. Shihaz Sulthan decided to revive his father’s ambition. With support from a trusted friend of the family, he acquired a small, struggling water facility and worked to improve its operations and business model. The renewed venture gradually established a strong customer base across the northern Emirates.
However, commercial success was only part of the dream. Bringing the original Al Madina name back to life remained an important family ambition. His brothers, Mr. Shahad Sulthan and Mr. Mohammed Shahanad, later joined the journey, helping carry the vision forward.
A Legacy Reborn
In May 2022, Mrs. Jameela Aboobacker launched Al Madina Water, bringing the family’s long-held aspiration back into the market.
Today, Al Madina Water stands as a symbol of perseverance, family unity, and dedication to quality. Through bottled drinking water, convenient delivery, and a continued focus on customer needs, the brand honours the vision that began decades ago.
